smart europe boss asked - new edition of the smart roadster or fortwo?

On Sunday afternoon the smart #3 was presented in Munich, and in the evening there was an anniversary celebration for the brand. Questions could also be asked of Dirk Adelmann. The current CEO of smart Europe GmbH. Of course, two questions should not be missing:

• Will there be a smart fortwo again?
• The smart roadster was very cool, a new version of it electric?

As you can expect, there was of course no "yes" or "no" to the questions. But it was exciting to hear that Mr. Adelmann's first company car was a smart roadster and that he himself had liked it very much. So he knows very well what the appeal of this car is. He summarized whether there would be another fortwo by asking whether there would be another fortwo:

In terms of content, he said that smart is considering a 2-seater and that this is potentially as big as the current fortwo. However, they are not yet specific internally, which is why he cannot go into it more specifically. That sounded to me like a rejection of the roadster and a commitment to the fortwo.

Technically they already could offer something with 200 miles for 2-3 years. But the prices are to high, so nobody would buy it. Hopefully prices will keep lowering, so we'll get a 200 mile fortwo and roadster.

But the priority from smart is definitely on a fortwo right now.

Meanwhile, “L’Argus” philosophizes about #2 and #4 without citing a real source or anything else. There is a English version of it on electrive.com:

According to the French portal L’Argus, the Smart #2 is expected to hit the streets in 2025 as the successor to the Smart Fortwo. L’Argus writes that the Smart #4, planned for 2026, will be a compact electric car to compensate for the demise of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

This means that even though the new Smart vehicles will be significantly larger than the original city runabouts, the manufacturer is not writing them off completely. Thus, the #2 will once again be a “minimalist” two-seater. Even if it is not ruled out that it will be “a few centimetres longer here and there” than the original. Externally, it could resemble the Vision EQ Fortwo concept presented in 2017.

Production of the current Smart Fortwo will cease next year. The successor will then no longer be built in Europe, but in China. The Chinese car company Geely, which is known to have an equal share in Smart as Mercedes-Benz, sells the electric Panda Mini through its Geometry brand. L’Argus speculates that the new Smart #2 could use the same platform, which could make the electric car significantly cheaper than its predecessor.

A fourth model is then planned for the following year 2026 with the Smart #4. So far, nothing is known about the planned vehicle, except that it will be in the C-segment. The BEV will reportedly be based on the #1 and #3 models, but not on Mercedes’ MMA platform. “It will thus support the new in-house SUV coupe in the C-segment,” the article states, “to better compete with the MG4, the Renault Mégane E-Tech , the Volkswagen ID.3 and others.”
